Grand Canyon National Park: A Dog Friendly Version

We visited in November 2021 as our last stop on our cross county road trip to California. I was worried The Grand Canyon would be overrated, but I was wrong. It was one of my favorite National Parks on our trip and would happily go back. We only visited the South Rim because we were past season for the North Rim (May 15- October 15). Dogs are not below the canyon rim, but there is still plenty of walking and exploring to do.

There is the Grand Canyon Kennel at the South Rim if you have an adventure planned and your pup can’t come. You’ll need proof of rabies, parvo, DHLP, and bordetella.

The Entrace Fee is $35 which is good for 7 days. It is good for both the South Rim and North Rim. America the Beautiful Pass is accepted. We suggest one full day with your pup.

Yavapai Point

A perfect spot for sunset with an easy parking lot access right next to it. Park at the Yavapai Point and Geology Museum.

Mather Point

The Mather Point Amphitheater is a great view point for sunset and an easy walk from the South Rim Visitor Center.

Hike Rim Trail

13 miles of pave path along the Grand Canyon wall. Gorgeous views from an easy to walk path. Watch out for holes- I wasn’t paying attention to where I was walking, so I stepped right in this hole. If it weren’t for my hiking boots I would have seriously hurt my ankle.

Where to Eat: Yavapai Lodge Tavern. Open 12-9pm, they have a select food menu and beer/ cocktails. There is first come, first serve patio seating with heaters and fire pits. Pups will need to someone to stay with them outside as you do need to go up to the counter inside to order your food and drinks. Then you’ll be given a number and they’ll bring it out to your table. We had the Elk Chili & All American Burger, both were great after a long day. Because it was November when we visited they also had a seasonal Mulled Wine that was amazing next to the heaters on a cold evening. We also stopped at the Canyon View Market & Deli to get some grab and go options for lunch. It’s a small grocery store with a deli in Market Plaza.

Where to Stay: Yavapai Lodge West has dog friendly rooms. They were newly refurbished when we stayed and were very comfortable rooms with parking right outside. We were charged an extra $25 per night for a pet fee and there is a max of 2 pets per room.

Axel’s Pup Tip: Bring a sweater! Depending on the time of year it can get VERY cold at night because of the elevation at the Grand Canyon. A doggie sweater was a must! For our bully breeds we suggest Tooth & Honey for all your sweater needs! They fit axel perfectly.
